In order to give you the most relevant and timely health information for our issue on Black Maternal Health, we consulted with an incredible team of civic advocates, health professionals and art activists.

Anthonia Akitunde is the founder and editor-in-chief of mater mea, a website that tells the stories of women of color at the intersection of motherhood and career. We spoke with her work and favorite health practices:

What are some of your favorite self-care practices?

Journaling, reading, walking aimlessly, and going to my favorite spa for a facial or massage once a month.

What is your favorite healthy food or recipe?

I make a mean quinoa bowl with eggplant chutney, roasted broccoli and sweet potatoes with hummus or tahini sauce. I'll make a big batch of all the components and have it for lunch every day. The flavors are savory enough that I don't feel bored, and it takes all the guesswork / temptation out of that meal.

Who has taught you the most in life so far?

Definitely my parents—I'm the proud, first-gen daughter of Nigerian immigrants.

What are your healthy living goals?

Doing at least 30-minutes of exercise a day.
