Did you know Black Friday has Philly roots? As the marker of the holiday shopping season, the Friday after Thanksgiving caused a rush of suburbanites into major cities, including Philadelphia. Back in the 1960s, Philadelphia police dubbed the chaos of increased crowds, traffic, and celebration “Black Friday” to elude the stress of the influx of civilians. The highly anticipated day of savings was later popularized in the 1980s with the red-to-black profit narrative, which rumored Black Friday was the day businesses in the “red” and in financial distress moved into the “black” with a boost in much-needed sales.
Today, we’re switching up the narrative ourselves and making Black Friday the day that Black businesses thrive. To keep the Black in Black Friday, here are ten incredible Black businesses to shop (and save) for you and those you love.
