Last year, Madison McFerrin invited Ife Obe, Founder of The Fit in Bedstuy and I to her ‘Artist in Residence’ series at The Greene Space by WNYC/NY Public Radio. Ife and I joined Madison for a live discussion on wellness, inclusivity, and access as it pertains to people of color. We were also accompanied by standup comedian and filmmaker, Kenice Mobley, and French-Caribbean multi-instrumentalist, Adeline (pronounced adaleen).

I was so moved by the invitation and the opportunity to speak alongside women who are deeply rooted in the arts and the space it provides for healing and transformation for PoC. Madison is a brilliant musician and advocate who uses her music and voice to uplift others. I spoke with her about her own personal health and taking care.

What’s your favorite self care practice?

Letting myself get ample sleep. Since my body is my instrument, it’s always really important that I take care of it to the best of my ability. The amount of sleep I get in a night is a big difference maker when it comes to my overall health and mood, so I always advocate for it when I can.

What is your favorite healthy food or recipe?

When I’m home, I start almost every day with some kind of smoothie. It will usually have some combo of greens and fruits, but varies depending on what we have and what I’m feeling. I notice such a difference when I’m on the road and don’t have that consistent dose of morning greens to get my day started.

Who has taught you the most in life so far?

My mother has taught me so much about what it means to be a thoughtful person. I’m still growing to live up to her example. She also taught me how to cook, which I’m incredibly grateful for.

What are your healthy living goals?

Maintaining a healthy diet, working out regularly, and shedding my ego. I think all of these things will help me live a healthy, full life.
