Artist to Watch: Illustrator, Cartoonist, and Scholar, Mollie Cronin
Cronin’s spark to create comics surrounding fat liberation began as a way of reconciling her attitudes about her own body and her feminist beliefs. As her politics grew and expanded, so did her practice. Cronin’s autobiographical comics evolved to include the diverse bodies of other “feral, women characters” and the creation of funny and positive representations of fat people. Her goal for her work is to help change people's attitude about diet culture, and to challenge the ingrained beliefs about fatness that often go unquestioned.
Cronin is now pursuing a PhD in Gender Studies at York University, researching the representation of fatness in comics. Her upcoming book, "Future Me is Fat," will be released in the fall.
